Some loved her talent, others her beauty, but very few ever forgot her. The things she loved most in life were her music, her religion, & my grandfather . He always joked, that he had to compete for her affection with both Bach & Jesus, wich is quite a tall order. This stunning garnet bangle belong to my grandmother, a gifted pianist whose soul was forever entwined with the streets & cafés of Prague. She was intense in the way artists often are, focused, passionate, magnetic, & not always easy to get a long wit. Her playing was expressive & precise, her presence unforgettable. People were drawn to her, though she cherished solitude. Some admired her for her talent others for her her beauty, but few forgot ever her. Details: Pendant size: 2.2 cm total; 1.4 cm for the pendant alone (without bail) Stones: Genuine Bohemian pyrope garnets Metal: Gold-plated 800 silver. The gold has worn over time, leaving the silver with a warm golden hue. On the back, the plating has rubbed away almost completely, revealing mostly silver. The silver hallmark is also on the back. Chain: Not original; carefully sanded by a jeweler to match the antique gold patina of the pendant. Packaging: Ships in the box shown in the photos, including the printed story of its origin. A whispered secret from another century. Ring size: EU 51, US 5.75, UK K½, France 51, Italy 11, Japan 11. Inner diameter: 16.2 mm. This ring belonged to my great-aunt, a radiant socialite in Prague whose life was a swirl of velvet gowns, candlelit salons, & moonlit carriage rides. Family legend says a Hungarian prince slipped it onto her finger one night in a Carriage, as they rode through the cobbled streets of the Old Town. He was enchanted, but she left him for a polish ships doctor & heir to a porcelain factory, my great uncle. She carried a striking presence well into old age. I remember how, whenever she stepped into a room, it was as if the air shifted, suddenly, that room belonged to her & everyone in it knew it. She wore this ring to poetry readings, masked balls, & diplomatic dinners, always with a knowing smile & a touch of mystery. The garnets are breathtaking, sparkling as if freshly cut, with a fire that dances in candlelight. The band is crafted from 835 silver & plated in gold, as was customary in fine Bohemian jewels to combine the strength & flexibility of silver with the warmth & richness of gold. It has a soft patina that deepens the ring's antique charm. Although it still sparkles like new, this is a very old ring. The gold plating has gently worn over time, especially on the inside, leaving a soft, warm golden hue rather than the full brilliance of fresh plating We're keeping her most intimate treasures: the ones gifted by my great uncle. In a time when East Germany was sealed off from the West, everyday luxuries like this perfume atomizer were the stuff of legends. My uncle, who had fallen in love with Biggy from East Berlin, not only slipped across the border to marry he, he actually carried this rare little treasure out of the DDR as a gift for his mother. Because he had gone voluntarily, where everyone else longed to leave, his request for birthday visits to the West where usually granted. My grandmother kept it in its box, proud & amused, because luxury items usually flowed the other way. Produced by VEB GPG, with its silhouettes of dancers & musicians circling the porcelain like shadows caught mid-song, it was more than just an atomizer. You might find one if you search, but almost never still cradled in its original box, a small, mischievous fragment of a divided world. This brooch belonged to my mother, Arielle, who worked in a French travel agency in the 1960s, arranging tickets for the legendary Simplon-Orient-Express. As family lore goes, she boarded that very train in Paris, bound for Venice.
