Authentic antique Italian Sorrento ware puzzle box, hand-crafted from richly grained olive wood in the classic stack-of-books trompe-l'œil form. Produced in Sorrento, Italy in the early 20th century, these boxes were prized luxury souvenirs of the Grand Tour & are now highly collectible. The lid features a finely detailed marquetry scene of a traditional dancing couple, framed by intricate geometric inlay. The front is designed as book spines with Roman numerals, concealing a hidden sliding puzzle mechanism that opens to reveal a secret compartment. The front also bears the inscription "Gossensass", referring to the historic Alpine village (now Colle Isarco) near the Brenner Pass. Such inscriptions were commonly added to souvenir pieces purchased during early 20th-century travel & reflect the object's history rather than its place of manufacture.
