1950s rare Hungarian pleated apron from 'KALOTASZEG' region. Kalotaszeg in Transylvania is one of the most famous & important ethnographic landscapes for Hungarian culture. Kalotaszeg has produced the highest amount in virtually all styles of Hungarian peasant art from costumes to embroidery, carving to building styles; music to dance. The cultural heritage from this region greatly impacted society at the end of the 19th century, with artists, scientists & aristocrats hugely influenced by the reputation of these folk traditions. These art forms were subsequently recognised by the royal court at the time. in spite of modernisation, these local traditions remained until very recently. Beautiful green Hungarian vestment with gold embroidery details from the beginning of the XX. century. The fashions worn during the Hapsburg era in Vienna & Budapest had their own kind of uniqueness. This is not to say that well-dressed Austrians & Hungarians of the periods covered in the exhibition were out of touch with what was considered fashionable to the rest of the Western world. On the contrary, the upper-class Austrian & Hungarian ladies were well aware of the latest French fashions. The gentlemen, too, were very much in tune with the sartorial modes of the French in the eighteenth century, & later, in the nineteenth century, they turned to the English styles, with their accent on elegance & superb tailoring.
