An impressive large 19th-century Bulgarian pafta belt buckle crafted in solid silver, originating from the rich tradition of Balkan bridal costume jewelry during the Ottoman period. This striking circular example features deeply repoussé floral ornament arranged in a symmetrical radial composition, demonstrating the bold sculptural style typical of Bulgarian folk silversmithing. The high relief decoration & generous scale would have made this piece a prominent element of a traditional bridal belt worn with regional festive costume. Paftas such as this were essential components of women's ceremonial dress throughout the Balkans in the 18th & 19th centuries, symbolizing both status & family wealth. Larger single-disc examples like this are particularly sought after by collectors of ethnographic & folk silver. The buckle retains a beautiful aged patina with traces of original gilding visible within the relief, enhancing the depth of the ornament & confirming its authentic period character. Details Origin: Bulgaria, Balkan region Period: 19th century (Ottoman-period Balkan folk silver) Material: solid silver Technique: repoussé & chased decoration Dimensions: approx. 15 × 13 cm Weight: 181 g Condition Good antique condition with natural age-related wear & patina consistent with 19th-century ethnographic silver. Structurally sound with strong relief & excellent decorative presence. Collecting Note Large Bulgarian pafta buckles are highly collectible examples of Balkan ethnographic jewelry & are increasingly appreciated both as cultural artifacts & as sculptural decorative objects. A finely crafted antique Chinese export silver lidded jar, dating to the late Qing dynasty, circa 1900. The rounded body & domed lid are richly decorated with dense hand-chased floral repoussé, featuring layered blossoms, curling tendrils, & textured backgrounds. The deep relief & lively variation in the decoration reflect traditional Chinese workshop craftsmanship. The jar opens to form two shallow bowls, each carefully finished. Pieces of this type were often used as decorative containers for sweets, tea accompaniments, or small personal items. The base is stamped with three vertical Chinese character cartouches, typical of workshop marks used on Chinese export silver produced during the late Qing & early Republic periods. The style of decoration & construction suggests production in a southern Chinese export silver workshop, likely Canton or Shanghai, around the turn of the 20th century. ⸻ Measurements Diameter: 8 cm Height: 5 cm Weight: 65.8 g ⸻ Condition Very good antique condition with age-appropriate wear & a natural patina. The decoration remains crisp & well defined. Antique Chinese Export Silver Lidded Jar - Hand-Chased Floral Repoussé Qing Dynasty C.1900
