L’Épée 1839's limited-edition 'Time Fast D8' table clock will likely evoke childhood memories, as the movement hand-winds to the rear just like a pull-back car. But in terms of complexity, it's actually more akin to the engineering of '50s Formula 1 racing motors, featuring aluminium bodywork just like the real deal, it's crafted from nickeland palladium-plated brass, with a skeletonised cage and glass dome exposing the 289-piece movement. The time-keeping element is wittily placed to the side of the chassis like a racing number, while a dome, or driver's helmet, if you so wish, showcases the escapement. Created in collaboration with École cantonale d'art de Lausanne and designer Juliette Lefèvre; it's engineered from stainless steel with touches of blue lacquer and palladium-plating in the vein of 1930s planes. This limited-edition piece keeps time with legible rotating discs, while the movement is displayed in the openwork cockpit. This 'Vanitas' skull is created in collaboration with Scottish artisan Ms Fiona Krüger; the motif has become her signature and she is captivated by the link between life, death and time. Limited to a run of 50, it's crafted from palladium-coated and PVD-coated brass and has a fitting skeletonised dial that reveals the workings of the in-house calibre 1853 hand-wound movement. The power reserve display is integrated into the mouth, which will begin to 'yawn' around 35 days to indicate it needs winding. Skeletonised skulls are wittily the timepiece artisan's signature, and take inspiration from Día de los Muertos festivities as a reminder to celebrate life. It's crafted from palladium-coated brass and has an appropriately skeletonised face, exposing the meticulously assembled hand-wound movement. The power reserve is displayed in the mouth, so to speak, and the skull appears to yawn as its energy diminishes.
